Keyboard Shortcuts
Web browser shortcuts
My favorite browser shortcut is ctrl+shift+t. It reopens the last closed tab in firefox. If you keep on clicking, previously closed tabs will keep reopening. How often has it happened that you closed a tab then realized that you really shouldn't have? Perhaps it took you long minutes of google searches to find that site, or perhaps you had had to navigate through multiple layers of a slow complex site to get to the tab. This shortcut alone makes it worth switching to firefox. Follow the link for my favorite firefox shortcuts. Some people rave about ctrl+enter. In popular browsers, if you type "salon" in the address window then hit ctrl + enter, the browser automatically fills the "www." at the beginning and the ".com" at the end. Although it's a good one, it hasn't yet burned itself into my brain. A variant is shift + enter, which adds "www." and ".net". (Useful for asiteaboutnothing.net.)
Windows system shortcuts
Do you know the key with the Windows logo on it? It's very very useful.Windows + E launches Windows explorer.
Windows + M brings you back to the desktop.
Windows + R launches the "Run" window (less useful in Vista as after pressing the Windows key you can type straight into the Start box).
Windows + F launches a search box.
PrntScrn prints the screen to the clipboard (you can then paste it in Irfanview or Photoshop). Actually that's not a shortcut, that's just what the key does!
Standard program shortcuts
Here are the ones I use all the time.Ctrl + right arrow moves the cursor by a whole word. (To go left one word, use the Ctrl + left arrow).
Ctrl + Home takes you to the top of a page or document, Ctrl + End takes you to the bottom.
Ctrl + a selects all, Ctrl + c copies, Ctrl + x cuts, Ctrl + v pastes.
Ctrl + z undoes.
Ctrl + s saves, Ctrl + o opens a document, Ctrl + n starts a new one.
Ctrl + w closes the document you're in ( Alt + F4 closes the application.)
